Carter Group's new Rolleston freight hub will address Canterbury's growing freight demands with rail connections that could remove 100,000 trucks annually.
A new 98-hectare South Island Freight Hub is being developed in Rolleston by the Carter Group to handle Canterbury's booming freight volumes, which are projected to increase by nearly 260,000 containers annually by 2042. The strategic location sits at the junction of railway lines connecting Christchurch, Picton, and Lyttelton.
"The South Island seems to me tailor-made for an expansion on reliance upon rail," says Regional Development Minister Shane Jones, who is considering funding a rail link that could remove 100,000 trucks from roads each year and save between $13.3-29 million in congestion, pollution, and other costs.
Tim Carter notes an "urgent need" for increased rail capacity to move goods to Lyttelton Port, with the new hub designed to scale with regional freight growth.
